found it, a player has to have played 6 seasons to become a free agent if the league is un-capped amd holmes will have played for 5 so he cannot become a free agent til after 2011 if the league is uncapped

quoting sdSteeler7:

if it becomes an un-capped league i read somewhere that the free agents would be restricted and can only sign with their current team for a couple years, kinda like arbitration in baseball

There wont be an uncapped league, even the corporate organized owners know that they cant allow that to happen, as well as the Union knows this, there will be a compromise between players and management thats designed to set limits on how the pie gets divided, I expect that since players are collecting 60% of the pie in bonuses and salary they will agree to a compensation package that will cap out rookie contracts to conform to more realistic compensation that gives them less money, and leave more for proven veterans to share cutting the 60% to a more reasonable 50%, when unproven 1 pick rookies get 41 million in a signing bonus theres obviously a flaw in how the pie is being sliced......

I think he'll be gone. Just a hunch, but I think his version of what his value is won't be within 2 mil per year of what the team's version of his value is. He has a Super Bowl MVP, and IMO he'll be looking for Larry Fitzgerald/Andre Johnson type money, while the team will be offering more along the lines of Hines Ward money.

I dont think he will get this huge paydat that everyone is talking about.  Andre Johnson/Larry Fitzgerald type money; he's not in their league yet...not in my eyes.  Could he be? Certainly.  Is he? Not now.

One thing that has to be on any WR's mind is who is throwing them the ball.  Alot of contracts, especially guys trying to get that big 2nd contract, are incentive based.  Catch 'X' amount of balls, BONUS! Catch 'X' amount of TD's, BONUS!  Run for 'X' amount of yards, BONUS!  Make the playoffs, BONUS!  Etc. - Do you think that WR's that are not in that very elite category can/would want to take such deals?  Doubtful...unless they are foolish.  I dont think Holmes is foolish.  He has a great thing here with a QB named Ben who doesn't give up on plays.  They have built quite the chemistry thus far - sky's the limit in the burgh!

. Outside of the GW catch in the SB, what has Santonio done that would warrant a big payday??

I dont think he is going to be worth that much money that everyone is thinking and for however much the steelers do break the bank for players like Tone, i.e ward, polamalu, big berger will all pretty much retire a steeler.
